Major Championships

The world's best golfers aspire to win as many "Major" championships as possible. Golf's majors (US Masters, British Open, US Open, US PGA) are held each year and are the pinnacle of golf achievement.

US Masters

  • Timing: April each year
  • Venue: Augusta National Golf Club, Augusta, Georgia, USA

US Open

  • Timing: June each year
  • A variety of US based courses including Pebble Beach, Pinehurst No. 2, Oakmont, Shinnecock Hills, Winged Foot, Merion, Torrey Pines, Congressional

The Open Championship

  • Timing: July each year
  • A selection of courses from within England, Scotland, Northern Ireland on the “Open Rota” including The Old Course at St Andrews, Muirfield, Royal St. Georges, Royal Liverpool, Royal Troon, Royal Lytham & St.Annes, Carnoustie, Royal Birkdale and Royal Portrush

US PGA Championship

  • Timing: August each year
  • A selection of US based courses including Riviera, Medinah Country Club No. 3, Oak Hill, Whistling Straits, Baltusrol, Hazeltine National, Kiawah Island (Ocean Course), Southern Hills, Inverness, Quail Hollow, Bethpage State Park (Black Course) and more

Other Signficant Golf Events Around the World

Whilst the above four events are considered golf's majors, a number of other events offer excitement, history and tradition well worth experiencing including:

The Ryder Cup

  • Timing: held every 2 years (2016, 2018 etc)
  • The Ryder Cup is a biennial men's golf competition between teams from Europe and the United States. It is contested every two years with the venue alternating between courses in the USA and Europe.
  • Venues have included Gleneagles, Celtic Manor, Valhalla, the K Club, Oakland Hills, The Belfry, The Country Club, Valderrama, Oak Hill, Kiawah Island

The Presidents Cup

  • Timing: every 2 years (2015, 2017 etc) – alternate years to the Ryder Cup
  • The Presidents Cup is a series of men's golf matches between a team representing the Unites States and an International Team representing the rest of the World minus Europe. It is contested every two years with the venue alternating between courses in the USA and in countries represented by the International Team.
  • Venues have included Royal Melbourne Golf Club, Fancourt Hotel & Country Club, Robert Trent Jones Golf Club, Royal Montreal Golf Club, Harding Park, Muirfield Village, Jack Nicklaus Golf Club

The World Cup

  • Timing: was regularly held on an annual basis however in recent years this has changed to biennial or greater. The World Cup is a men's golf tournament contested by teams of two representing their country. Only one team is allowed from each country. Players are selected on the basis of the official world golf rankings.
  • Venues have included Kiawah Island (Ocean Course), Mission Hills China, Gulf Harbour New Zealand, Royal Melbourne with Kingston Heath GC in Melbourne hosting the 2016 event
