Federal Golf Club

The Federal Golf Club is located close to the geographical centre of Canberra, settled in the lee of Red Hill with superb views of the Brindabella Mountains.

The course is rated amongst the top sixty inland courses in Australia and its Par 72 Championship layout is a true test of golf.

The expansive and pristine fairways of the 18 hole championship course undulate through stands of majestic eucalypts towards quality greens protected by well placed bunkers and swales.

Native birds and animals flourish in the surrounding bush, and the golfer is presented with glorious views of the Brindabella Ranges on most holes.

The golf course challenges players of all skill levels with its 6,248 metre, par 72 layout, while the clubhouse offers solace or reward after the game.

Playing Tips

1	Par 5, Length 473m Position drive right of centre which opens up for downhill and second shot. Green has many tiers, so make sure you are on the same level as the flag to avoid 3 putting.
2	Par 4, Length 357m Tee shot must be positioned left of centre avoiding trees to the right. Mid iron selection for the second shot, however can't afford to be long over the green.
3	Par 3, Length 150m Downhill par 3 to an elevated well bunkered green. Always plays one less club than normal because of the tee's elevation.
4	Par 4, Length 323m A slight dogleg left with bunkers on the left and right of the fairway at the bend for the longer hitters off the tee. From the bend there is a steep incline to an elevated green with two bunkers on the right and a grass 'pot' to the front left.
5	Par 4, Length 287m Tee shot must be hit right of centre to hold fairway because of its sloping right to left. Short iron approach to a tricky well bunkered green.
6	Par 4, Length 402m Tee shot to be positioned left of centre to hold fairway to the right. Approach is with a long iron to a flat green.
7	Par 5, Length 444m A dogleg left with a large bunker on the left of the fairway at the bend. The fairway crests at the corner revealing a narrow entrance to a tiered green protected by two bunkers on the right and one to the higher left side where swales provide additional interest.
8	Par 3, Length 125m Mid iron shot to a green that slopes quite severely back to front. Well bunkered and easier to putt if putting up the slope.
9	Par 4, Length 355m Most difficult hole on the course. Tee shot positioned right of centre to hold fairway on the left. Second shot approach should be aimed right of target because of your feet being lower than the ball.
10	Par 4, Length 387m Downhill par 4 that requires a tee shot down the left side. Second shot can be short allowing ball to run down onto the green.
11	Par 4, Length 321m Dogleg right to left par 4 that needs tee shot to be right of centre so as not to be blocked out for second shot by trees on the left.
12	Par 3, Length 184m A straight hit from an elevated tee across a valley to a forward sloping green protected by bunkers on both sides. Probably Canberra's best Par 3.
13	Par 5, Length 450m Uphill par 5 that requires a tee shot left of centre. Second shot to avoid bunkering 80 metres short of the green. Short iron third to a large sloping green.
14	Par 4, Length 353m Demanding uphill par 4. Tee shot to be hit over trees on the left edge of fairway to shortcut the hole. Green is long and slopes back to front.
15	Par 4, Length 308m A dogleg right. Drive from an elevated tee to the bend with a shallow bunker on the right. From the bend there is a steep incline to an elevated tiered green protected by bunkers to the front right and left. There is another bunker on the left side of the green.
16	Par 3, Length 147m Shortish downhill par 3 that is well bunkered and green slopes slightly left to right.
17	Par 5, Length 497m Drive left of centre and second shot hit left of centre to avoid ball running into right rough. Short iron third shot to a well bunkered green.
18	Par 4, Length 328m A dogleg right staring with an uphill drive towards the corner. The fairway continues climbing to an elevated, sloping green. Shallow bunkers on both sides of the fairway line the approach to a narrow, raised entrance to the green with a substantial bunker on the front right.
